Software Engineering Intern

Puppet, Remote

Internship - Engineering

Salary Range: DOE

Close Date: 08/07/2020

Hi, I’m David Kramer, Sr. Manager of Engineering at Puppet,

I’m seeking a Software Engineering Intern to join our team in helping us build Puppet Enterprise, a market-leading configuration management solution. We’re a cross-functional team focused on delivering user-facing features, contributing primarily to the on-premise web application component of Puppet Enterprise that our customers use to view and manage change across their infrastructure. Our work directly impacts the user experience of our software and we keep the customer in mind at all times when developing features.

In this role, you'll be part of the team, doing the kind of work we all do, while learning from experienced developers on the team. We'll personalize the workload for you, to make sure you learn and grow as much as you can. You'll get to pair regularly with a team member on tasks and always be able to ask questions and receive advice, but you'll also get the chance to work on tasks independently when you're ready. You'll receive feedback on work and plenty of chances to grow and improve, all to get you ready for a career in software development.

As an intern on the team you’ll have the opportunity to go beyond just writing code and tests. You’ll experience many aspects of the software development lifecycle, from design and planning, through to support and maintenance. You’ll participate in conversations about how to solve the most important problems our customers face. In this role, the primary programming languages that you’ll be using day to day are JavaScript and Ruby, and there will be opportunities to use other languages such as Clojure.

Our goal is to hire folks who are interested in growing their careers beyond their internship position with Puppet. Ideally, we're looking for individuals who would be available after the end of the internship period, or within 12 months for students wrapping up their last year. This is a full-time (40 hrs/week) with a duration of about 12 weeks.

Familiarity with any programming language, and the ability to understand and discuss different implementation tradeoffs.
General knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and programming paradigms will be helpful, but we don't expect you to be an expert.
Experience solving problems with programming and troubleshooting code.
Skilled at collaborating with others and using their feedback to improve.
Willing to try new things, adapt, and ask for help when needed.
Capacity and drive to learn. You don't need to be a student or have studied computer science at school, teaching yourself is great too.
Ability to thrive remotely without constant oversight
Working in a distributed environment
We are hiring at various experience levels and we’re particularly interested in having a diverse team with a broad set of skills and viewpoints. If this seems like your dream job, but you’re not sure if you qualify, apply anyway!

*Visa Sponsorship

Unfortunately, Puppet is not able to sponsor applicants for U.S. work authorization for this opportunity (such as an H-1B), now or in the future.
