Every 10 years, Portland’s City Council brings together 20 Portland residents to form the Charter Commission. The Commission has broad authority to examine the existing charter and recommend amendments to our City’s founding documents. The work of the Commission could include considering the way the government operates, how council members are elected and the rules that govern the City’s policies and structure.
As the Commission is guided by principles of equity, engagement and representation, community members are encouraged to apply to serve on the Commission and follow this project. City Council is committed to creating a Commission that is representative of the City’s demographics and geography – especially Black communities, Indigenous communities, and communities of color whose voices and experience are often underrepresented in government. Recognizing the importance of this discussion, the City is committed to having BIPOC voices engage and lead in this effort.Apply to join the Charter Commission today. https://www.portland.gov/omf/charter-review-commission/about-charter-commission.
